Yu-Ting Chung is a Taiwanese artist based in London. Her practice investigates how jing (境) emerges through relationships between bodies, materials and elemental forces, inviting alternative ways of perceiving and inhabiting space. Rather than treating space as a fixed container, she explores how perception is reoriented through encounters with atmosphere, movement and the continual formation of space.
Working across painting, installation, murals and artist publications, Chung draws from East Asian spatial thought and Taiwan’s island sensibilities to explore painting as a spatial language. She employs suspended cotton and hemp fabrics, mineral pigments, ink and natural materials, preserving traces of brushwork, splashes and material resistance. These material interactions allow each work to remain open to transformation. Air, water, gravity, light and time are not subjects to be depicted, but active forces that participate in the making of each work.
In the Travellers series, Chung investigates what she describes as 龍的空間 (dragon’s space). Inspired by Zhuangzi’s description of the dragon in Tian Yun (天運), she explores forms that continually gather and disperse, asking whether belonging is not a destination but an ongoing process through which new relationships, spaces and worlds emerge.
