PIDGIN TOWARDS MULTILINGUALISM –
CALLIGRAPHY BATTLE AND ZINE-MAKING WORKSHOP

Pidgin, a term born out of the gap that often occurs in translation, presents a situation in which a way of communicating emerges organically amongst people speaking different languages. Inspired by the artwork Calligraphy Battle by Taiwanese artist Chung Yu-Ting, the workshop took the form of a ‘calligraphy battle’ to assemble a multilingual lexicon, and engaged with questions such as: How does your mother tongue stimulate your creative process? What does your language(s) mean to you, culturally, socially, politically and personally? What conflicts can occur when someone knows multiple languages or only one language?

A lexicon is a person’s vocabulary, language, or branch of knowledge. The words being used, circulated, and invented by queer people are evidence of their lives, communication, and recognition of each other, archiving queer threads from past to present. This workshop is in collaboration with the resident artist Beatrix Pang and Wendi Liao, building upon Pangea’s project Queer Reads Lexicon with Queer Reads Library, exploring queerness in the context of local languages.
